JAMES WILLIAM HERTEL, SR. of Greenwood, Ind., 99, retired associate clergy member of the Indiana Conference and father of the Rev. James Wesley Hertel, Jr., associate pastor of Mt. Auburn United Methodist Church in Greenwood, died Sunday, July 20, 2014. A memorial service will be held in The Courts at Mt. Auburn United Methodist Church, 3100 West Stones Crossing Road, Greenwood, IN 46143, at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 24 with visitation from 9 to 11 a.m. at the church. Burial will at The Gardens at Olive Branch Cemetery. Survivors include: his wife of 77 years, Martha L. Hertel; children, Dr. Marti (Robert) Eicholz of San Diego, and Dr. J. Wesley (Pat) Hertel of Greenwood; seven grandchildren, Gretchen Beaman of Franklin, Amanda Haase of Franklin, Justin Hertel of Chicago, Robert Eicholz of Calif., Alan Eicholz of Calif., Anna Lovell of S.C. and Emily Semmler of Greenwood and 23 great-grandchildren. James, Sr., was a pastor, evangelist and college president during his 62 years of ministry. He served in Indiana churches at Elnora, English, Columbus, Evansville, Indianapolis (Blaine & Belmot) and Bicknell. After retirement, he served at Salem UMC for 12 years.
