LEONTINE TURPEAU CURRENT KELLY of Oakland, Calif., 92, a retired bishop of The United Methodist Church, died Thursday, June 28, 2012. She was the first African-American woman elected a bishop in The United Methodist Church. She was elected in 1984 as a clergy member of the Virginia Conference by the Western Jurisdiction of the church across jurisdictional boundaries and served the San Francisco Area. She holds honorary doctorate degrees from Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary (1984), DePauw University (1989) and Christian Theological Seminary (1989), as well as other schools. Visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, July 4, from 4 to 8 p.m., at Jones Memorial United Methodist Church in San Francisco. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. PT on Thursday, July 5, at Jones Memorial UMC. Kelly is survived by one daughter, Angella Current Felder; two sons, Gloster B. and John David Current, and an adopted daughter, Pamela Lynne Kelly, her late husband’s great-granddaughter.
