Stidham United Methodist Church, located at 5300 S. CR 175 West near West Lafayette in Union Township of Tippecanoe County, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Named after founding donor, Jasper Stidham, the congregation was established and the present Arts and Craft Style church was built in 1915.
Contributing to the historical value of the church are the magnificent stained glass windows and dome designed by Lafayette artisan Miss Edna Browning Ruby who was world renowned for her skill.
At the time of her death in 1938, Miss Ruby was the only woman in the United States who designed, built, and installed stained glass windows. Two churches in Indianapolis also had her windows – West Washington Street Methodist Church and United Brethren Church on Walnut.
Reverend Roy Laudermilk, a former Stidham UMC minister, had a dream of putting the church on the National Register of Historic Places. Finally, on November 27, 1992, this goal was realized. Factors which contributed to the recognition were the unique stained glass winds and dome. Deep, rich colors blend together to create religious symbols. A soft, spiritual glow descends on the chancel from the stained glass dome (photo insert).
