The Hopewell Methodist Episcopal Church was organized in 1845 by Mark Stratton, licensed as a local preacher from 1872 through 1881. He was the father of Geneva Stratton who was born in the Hopewell neighborhood, worshipped in her father’s church, and went on to become famed Hoosier author Gene Stratton-Porter. The church and cemetery are at the northeast corner of Wabash County Roads 300N and 500E (also known as Gene Stratton Porter Road). A monument to Stratton-Porter is across the road.
