Position Summary: The position of Children’s/Youth ministry director is an inter gram member of the leadership team at First United Methodist Church (FUMC). This person must love young people and have a passion for outreach, both personally and at the ministry level. They will be a self-motivated leader, capable of casting and imparting a vision for ministry as well as possessing relational skills with children, students, parents, and staff.
Scope: The Children’s/Youth Ministry oversight applies to those from newborn to completion of high school. Ministries shall be age-based/defined and involve various purposes within each age range: outreach, worship, fellowship, mission, & discipleship.
The Children’s/Youth Ministry Director will:
Lead and organize children’s programs implementing outreach, worship, fellowship, mission, & discipleship.
Recruit, train, and shepherd volunteer children’s staff.
Maintain contact with children, students, and parents to keep them informed of ongoing activities.
Keep parents updated on ministry strategies and plans in a way that encourages partnership and involvement.
Supports parents in effectively fulfilling the Christian parenting roles, in concert with other pastoral staff.
Assist in the development and oversight of the Children’s ministry budget including grants, student fees for events and trips.
Seek to integrate children’s ministry into all phases of church life to create a culture that is intentionally intergenerational, striving to unite with and complement other church ministries.
Participate as needed or requested in the evaluation and development of overall church ministry.

Duties in Children’s/Youth Ministry
Plan, direct, conduct, and evaluate a comprehensive Children’s Ministry taking into consideration the spiritual, physical, social, and psychological development of Children.
Study and recommend changes in the ministry as needed for organization, space use, equipment and furnishing needs, policies and procedures, materials, programs, curriculum, education methods etc.
Work with leadership to enlist and train adult workers. Motivate, instruct, and coordinate the activities of adult workers. Plan and train adults to lead children to salvation and nurture them in Christian development.
Ensure that adequate adults are present for all programs and activities.
Prepare an annual budget for Children’s Ministry needs and administer budget according to church policy.
Submit reports to the board for review that includes challenges, concerns, successes, and progress made toward goals.
Duties in other ministry areas:
Participate in Worship as directed by Sr. Pastor
Serve as a member of the church council representing the Children’s/Youth Ministry and coordinating with other church ministries.
Cooperate with denominational and other Christian leaders, including Young Life/Wyld Life, in promoting activities of mutual interest.
Children’s/Youth Minister Qualifications and Accountability
Spiritually—Must profess a calling to Children’s ministry. Exhibit a personal and growing relationship with God, and possess a teachable spirit.
Ethically—Must maintain valid driver’s license, safe driving record and be insurable on church policies. Must be willing to submit and pass a criminal background check.
Financially—Children’s ministry director is expected to tithe, keep their financial obligation current, and show fiscal responsibility. Must be able to maintain accurate records for children’s fundraisers, grants, and/or payments for children’s activities.
Organizationally—Children’s Minister must maintain open communion in planning and directing through frequent meetings with Sr. Pastor, Board, and parent volunteers. Will be evaluation yearly by Staff Parish.
Educationally—Preference will be given to a college graduate, although candidates will be evaluated on the entirety of their qualifications. Children’s ministry director is expected to improve personal skills and abilities through continued training. Ideal candidate will possess a minimum of an associate’s degree, experience in Children’s ministry, basic administrative skills, and a growing spiritual life.
